Q8. Hydropower is a more favorable source of energy compared to other sources such as coal and nuclear power. Support this statement by using evidence from the text… Ans: Hydropower is more favorable because it is less harmful to the environment and it is safer to people in the surrounding areas. It is less harmful to the environment because it creates very few gaseous emissions, unlike coal which releases toxic gases and contaminants in the air when it is burned. It is safer to people in the surrounding areas when compared to nuclear power which could pose massive risks to people near nuclear power plants if radiation were leaked in the event that the nuclear plant is damaged.

Q9. List at least two positive effects and two negative effects of the Hoover Dam… Ans: Positive effects include: the Dam utilizes hydropower, one million acres of land around the Dam are irrigated, the Dam generates 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, the Dam helps to absorb water which keeps potential floods under control, construction of the Dam led to the employment of thousands of people during the Great Depression, and the Dam has been a key factor in the development of major American cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Negative effects include: 112 people died during the Hoover Dam’s construction, the Dam has used up water which has led to the decline of local ecosystems, the water levels in the Colorado River have been reduced which has diminished plant life, certain fish have been endangered in the Colorado River because the Dam has changed the River’s temperature, and fish have been killed by the Dam’s turbines.

Q10. Explain whether the operations of the Hoover Dam should be extended. Use evidence from the text to support your answer… Ans: Students may argue yes, the operations of the Hoover Dam should be extended because of the benefits it has provided to the Southwest region, including electricity, irrigation, and flood control. These benefits outweigh the negative effects of the Dam. Students may argue no, the operations of the Hoover Dam should not be extended because of the negative environmental effects it has had. The Dam has endangered fish species, compromised local ecosystems, and changed the water levels and temperatures of the Colorado River. There is no indication from the passage that these problems have been solved or are close to being solved. These effects may be far too harmful so the Hoover Dam’s operations should be suspended. Other answers are valid as long as students reasonably integrate information from the text.
