Discussion Questions & Answers
Following are our answers based on the questions provided:
Q.1. What do you think Vonnegut means when he says that he is a “real person”? Why does he work so hard to convey this point? Explain your answer.
Ans: Vonnegut means when he says that he is a “real person” that some people damage his reputation by saying that his writings are fictitious and damaging to the minds of students. Charles McCarthy, the head of the school board has decided to burn all books of Vonnegut because he assumes that the lesson taught to the children has inappropriate language. For this reason, Vonnegut wrote a letter to Charles McCarthy, who was the head of the school board in order to explain that the lessons written by him have no appropriate language or any evil ideas which damage the character and mind of the student.
Q.2. According to Vonnegut, what does being American mean? Do you agree with Vonnegut when he says the burning of books is un-American? Why or why not?
Ans: According to Vonnegut, being American means never having to say you are sorry since it is free will. I do agree that burning books is un-American because first and foremost, you are destroying what another person put their time and effort to create, and also it is harmful to students. This is because it is important to protect students against some potentially destructive ideas.
Q.3. In the context of this letter, which is more important: freedom of speech, or the protection of young people from what some may see as harmful ideas? Cite evidence from this text, your own experience, and other literature, art, or history in your answer.
Ans: In the context of this letter, freedom of speech is more important because as an American you have the right to do so, which is also what makes America unique as said previously. In the letter, it stated that “Perhaps you will learn from this that books are sacred to free men for very good reasons and that wars have been fought against nations which hate books and burn them”(Vonnegut 8). This explains that it is a privilege to be free and write what you desire, and America is against the ones who burn books because that destroys a person’s way of speech, since most writers use writing as a form of expressing their feelings.
Q.4. In the context of this letter, what makes America unique? Cite evidence from this text, your own experience, and other literature, art, or history in your answer.
Ans: In the context of this letter, America is unique because we have free will for the people, freedom of speech, press, and anything, therefore it was very unAmerican to burn the books because he had the freedom and no limit to write, and the school took that away and ruined Venneguyt’s reputation. As stated in the letter, ” If you are an American, you must allow all ideas to circulate freely in your community, not merely your own”(Vonnegut 8). This displays that Americans have the right to express what they believe and that can not be taken.
