Q.1. Why do you think Charles acts out in school? Have you ever misbehaved in class? Why do you think you did this and how did you feel afterward?
Ans: Charles may act out in school for various reasons. It could be due to a lack of attention or support at home, difficulty with academics, social pressures, or seeking attention from peers. As an academic tutor, I have not personally misbehaved in class. However, students may misbehave in class due to boredom, frustration, lack of engagement with the material, or personal issues affecting their behavior. After misbehaving, one might feel regretful or embarrassed depending on the consequences and impact it has on others.

Q.2. Why do you think Laurie lies in the story? Have you ever been dishonest with someone? What led you to do this?
Ans: In the story, Laurie lies as a way to gain attention and popularity among his classmates. People may lie for different reasons such as to avoid punishment or negative consequences, to protect themselves or others from harm, to seek approval or acceptance from others, or to manipulate a situation to their advantage. Personal experiences can vary; however, being dishonest can stem from fear of judgment or rejection and a desire for personal gain.

Q.3. In the story, there is a conflict between how Laurie acts in school and how his parents see him. Why do we act differently in various situations or around other different groups of people? Is this a good skill to have or is it dishonest?
Ans: People often act differently in various situations because they adapt their behavior based on social norms and expectations within those contexts. This is known as impression management and is influenced by factors such as cultural background, social roles we play (e.g., student vs employee), desired outcomes (e.g., fitting in vs standing out), and individual personality traits (e.g., introversion vs extroversion). While adapting our behavior can be seen as a necessary skill for navigating different environments effectively and maintaining positive relationships with others; it becomes dishonest when it involves intentionally deceiving others for personal gain without considering ethical implications.

His mother should be able to see this, but she is too wrapped up in her complicated life to notice. The irony is that they are so judgmental of Charles and ignore Laurie’s misbehavior.
