The author, Adrienne Su, is Chinese-American but was raised in Georgia in the United States. Peaches are native to Northwest China, but are also strongly associated with Georgia since it is their state fruit and Georgia’s nickname is “the Peach State.” Therefore, when Su is asked where she is from originally, she wants to reply “the homeland of the peach” because she is both Chinese and Georgian, two places considered to be the homeland of the peach. This would reconcile both of her identities without her having to explain that she is from two places. However, she knows that people wouldn’t do the research to find out what the homeland of the peach is or what she meant, so because she is too nice as she says she will simply explain to people that she is a Chinese-American from Georgia.
