This contributes to the speaker’s identity by highlighting their complex cultural background and the internal conflict they may face in reconciling different parts of their identity.
As for my personal experience, there was a time when I moved to a new country where English was not the primary language. I felt different from others because I struggled with communication due to language barriers. It made me feel isolated and frustrated at times, as I couldn’t fully express myself or understand others easily. However, it also motivated me to learn the local language and adapt to my new environment.

Ans: In the poem, when the speaker realizes that her family’s way of buying peaches and storing food sets them apart as an immigrant family from other American families, it highlights cultural differences between them. Similarly, every family has unique traditions or practices that make them different from others.
In my own family, we have certain customs related to celebrating festivals or preparing traditional dishes that are specific to our culture. These practices make us feel connected to our heritage but can also create a sense of being distinct from those who don’t share these traditions.
Overall, these differences can evoke mixed emotions – pride in preserving cultural heritage but also occasional feelings of being separate or misunderstood by those who don’t share similar experiences or customs.

It’s common in America to be asked where you are from “originally” – especially if you appear to be ethnically or racially diverse. The author, Adrienne Su, is Chinese-American but was raised in Georgia in the United States. Peaches are native to Northwest China, but are also strongly associated with Georgia since it is their state fruit and Georgia’s nickname is “the Peach State.” Therefore, when Su is asked where she is from originally, she wants to reply “the homeland of the peach” because she is both Chinese and Georgian, two places considered to be the homeland of the peach. This would reconcile both of her identities without her having to explain that she is from two places. However, she knows that people wouldn’t do the research to find out what the homeland of the peach is or what she meant, so because she is too nice as she says she will simply explain to people that she is a Chinese-American from Georgia.
